Executive Summary Bishoftu is located in Oromia National Regional State, East Shewa Zone at a distance of 47 Km from Addis Ababa. Its astronomical location is 8º 43’- 8º 45’ North Latitude & 38º 56’- 39º 01’ East Longitude. According to CSA carried out in 2007, the population of the town has a total population of 99,928 The insufficient collection and inappropriate disposal of solid wastes result in water, land and air pollution, and pose risks to human health and the environment. Over the past years, industrialization, rapid urbanization and economic growth in the city tend to further deteriorate this situation. One of the major environmental problems of our city is waste generated by different activities. Inappropriate waste management in our city impede development opportunities by destructing image of our city, posing threats to our crater Lakes, human health, and diverting limited resources to unproductive uses. The sectoral GTP has set a target to construct 358 landfills and improving collection coverage to effectively utilizes the landfills and improves the sanitation of cities in the country. Moreover, the sector has also targeted to construct 50 compost centers during the GTP period. Therefore, this project greatly helps to achieve the sector’s GTP target. In the national climate resilient green economy, the urban sector has also identified establishing proper solid waste management system landfill gas management, composting and recycling) as a major lever for GHG emission. Therefore, this project, Solid Waste Management to build clean and green city is directly aligned to the CRGE initiatives.
