Executive Summary The inefficient solid waste collection system in Jigjiga city administration has resulted in an accumulation of waste on open spaces and open drainage facilities (natural and man-made) causing environmental pollution. The problem is evident polluting different water sources and soil in the city with its unmanaged leachate and directly from the scattered waste. The piles of waste disposed illegally are emitting methane. Uncontrolled burning of waste is resulting in air pollution and emits Co2 that contributes to the global climate change. The problem is also affecting city’s environment, residents’ health and social wellbeing. Furthermore, environmental degradation is expanding affecting the surrounding wetlands, natural habitats, forests and other fragile ecosystems. The primary objectives of this project will improving the solid waste collection coverage of the city in general and kebele 01,02,03, 05,06 and 07 in particular, and reducing environmental pollution and creating job opportunity to the city inhabitants.
