Executive Summary Ethiopian highland bamboo (Arundinariaalpina) grows in highland areas (2400-3500 masl) where vivid environmental degradation, declining land productivity and increasing unemployment thereby poverty are apparent. The utilization of bamboo resource in the country in general and Oromia region in particular, to date, has been limited to customary uses. The overall aim of this project is to improve livelihood of the community through income and employment generation and augment climate change adaptation and mitigation by effectively utilizing and managing bamboo stands in highland areas. Oromia Forest and Wildlife Enterprise (OFWE) will be the leading executing organization for planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the project. Activities, Bamboo plantations will increase, the existing bamboo vegetation will be managed in a sustainable way, Bamboo based income generation and livelihoods will be promoted by creating market linkages between farmers, traders and processors and consumers. The total budget required for implementing this project is USD 470,500.
